Chaos is Not of God

July 8, 2020

The rampant disorder in the major cities of America today is a spiritual disease. It’s hard to know what is worse, the rioting and wanton destruction of our heritage or the abject dereliction of duty by the politicians in charge of the cities. Either way, chaos is not of God, and is symbolic of the spiritual problem we are facing.

The Spiritual Roots of Social Problems

Keep in mind that all external disruptions in human society have deeper causes. By the time the disorder erupts into outward chaos and violence, the inner sources of it have already been simmering underneath the surface, usually for a long time.

This is true of social problems but more so of spiritual problems, which underlie all social disorder.

Long-Term Consequences

America is now facing the consequences of numerous social diseases that have been festering under the surface of our urban cultures for decades.

Here’s the primary and deepest of all the problems: several generations of welfare dependency have replaced the presence of fathers in the family with government.

Lack of moral guidance and discipline in the home, subsistence-level dependence on government checks, and the total breakdown of culture have bred the toxic mix of evils that are erupting in our cities today.

Adam’s Sin

Do you think the 30-year-old black man who struck a 92-year-old white woman on the streets of New York last month – for no reason whatsoever – grew up with a father in the home? The question answers itself. He has been in and out of jail more than one hundred times and elder abuse was just the latest in his long string of crimes.

An unprovoked incident like that has deep spiritual roots. In fact, the roots extend all the way back to the Garden of Eden, where Adam renounced his responsibility to protect his wife and let a snake seduce her into sin. His progeny, in turn, produced a murderer, Cain, who symbolizes all that is happening today.

In other words, the sin of Adam produces the disorder in the human heart. The disorder produces the crime. The crime produces the chaos. And the sins of negligence of the politicians perpetuate the chaos, driving it into future generations.

Time to Wake Up

We may not be able to stop crime in a big city where we don’t live. Most Americans have no way to do anything about that.

But it is every American’s calling to wake up and realize that the chaos will not go away on its own. That is not how evil works.

Social disorder has to be purged through civic responsibility and law enforcement, and each of us can and must do our part in those matters. But spiritual sin has to be purged through spiritual integrity, prayer, penance and faith.

Our wake-up call comes primarily in the call to spiritual vigilance that our Lord Jesus Christ issued in the Gospel of Matthew:

Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. (Matthew 24:42-44)

Isn’t it interesting that He used the analogy of a crime to reinforce His teaching?

Everyone Needs to Pray

A spiritual problems requires a spiritual solution, and therefore, as a sign of spiritual awakening, we pray.

We must pray every day for our President – the singular focus of all this evil and chaos – and for his reform agenda for America.

We must pray that politicians take the responsibilities of their offices squarely on their shoulders and address the social chaos for the protection of individuals and whole societies – and vote them out of office if they don’t.

We must pray to drive out these demons of chaos, discord, satanic manipulation of crises, abuse of power, etc. They are all part of the same chaotic mix that is not of God and will never be fruitful for society.

Every one of us must pray every day. With the growing force of prayer, in time we will see the spiritual effects of the holy power in our midst.

It will take time, but it starts now!
